Socioeconomic Status: The American Psychological Association defines socioeconomic status as the social standing or class of an individual or group. It is often measured as a combination of education, income and occupation. Examinations of socioeconomic status often reveal inequities in access to resources, plus issues related to privilege, power and control.
First Generation (NCES): The National Center for Education Statistics defines first-generation college students as those who are enrolled in postsecondary education and whose parents do not have any postsecondary education experience. However, definitions vary between states, schools, and institutions, and we want to include you if you identify as first-generation based on your family’s level of educational attainment and limited exposure to or knowledge about attending college.
Low Income (NCES): The National Center for Education Statistics defines low income students as those whose family income was below 125 percent of the federally established poverty level for their family size.
The Center is the premier source of evidence-based practices, professional development, and knowledge creation for the higher education community to advance the success of first-generation students.
