Using AI Ethically in Your Academic Projects

How do I know if I'm using AI ethically?

Short answer: if you’re letting AI do your work for you without disclosing its use, that counts as academic dishonesty and unethical use of AI.

How can AI be on your TEAM?

To ensure that you are using AI ethically and responsibly in your academic assignments, use the TEAM framework.

Transparency

Transparency

  • Be transparent about AI usage.
  • Disclose the following information when using AI for academic assignments:
    • Which AI you used (e.g., ChatGPT)
    • What you asked it to do
    • How you used its results

Evaluation

Evaluation

  • AI often hallucinates or provides wrong answers!
  • Always evaluate or fact check the responses an AI gives you.
    • If the AI provides sources for its information, click the links and trace it to its original source.
    • Make sure that the information is true and is not being removed from its proper context.
  • Be aware of AI’s biases!

Attribution

Attribution

  • When you use content from AI, cite it!
  • Even if you do not directly quote from the AI, if you use the AI significantly in your assignment process, include it in your works cited page.
  • Find resources for how to cite AI content on the homepage of the ARH 111 research guide.

Minimal Use

Minimal Use

  • Remember: AI is a tool.
  • Don’t become dependent on AI, but use it as little as possible.
  • Your professors want to see your thinking, your writing, your creativity, and your growth as a student.
    • Only use AI when it can help you accomplish those goals. Don’t let dependence on it hold you back.
