For Faculty: Teaching and Learning Collaborative: TLC "No Guilt" Reading Discussion Group

In Language Machines NYU Professor Leif Weatherby argues that current approaches to artificial intelligence generally ignore the cultural shaping force of LLMs and that a “Return to Rhetoric” could provide requisite training for the new historical era inaugurated by the advent of widespread AI adoption. Join the TLC “No Guilt” Reading Group to discuss the book’s argument (encapsulated in the Intro, Ch. 1, & Conclusion) on this historic shift and what this might mean for a changing educational landscape.

In honor of March being Women's History Month, the TLC Reading Group will read and discuss the essay, "In the Name of Beauty" by Tressie McMillan Cottom, a writer, columnist, and professor of sociology at Virginia Commonwealth University. Cottom argues that dominant beauty standards are a product of white supremacy, capitalism, and patriarchy, which are harmful to Black women. She contends that these standards are not neutral and serve to control women through a system of oppression.
The reading group will discuss the themes of navigating competing cultural standards, self-perception, and power, and connect them to higher education–to our students' self-perceptions, classroom curricula, and course discussions.
