SUNY Reconnect is a groundbreaking initiative making community college free for eligible adult learners in New York State. If you're between 25-55 years old and a resident of New York State and haven't earned a college degree, you may qualify for:
Free tuition, fees, books, and supplies (after applying all available financial aid programs like NYS TAP or Pell).
Enrollment in high-demand associate degree programs, such as nursing, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, AI, engineering, green energy, teaching, and allied health.
The flexibility to attend part-time or full-time, with just six credits per semester being the minimum requirement.
The program must be completed within ten semesters, with some campuses offering support like credit transfer for prior learning, part-time enrollment, and even reasonable breaks for life events.
Removes financial barriers for adult learners. By covering the cost of education beyond traditional aid, this program eliminates a major obstacle for working adults and families.
Targets high-demand career fields. It helps adults gain credentials for well-paying, in-demand professions—supporting both personal advancement and regional workforce needs.
Supports inclusion and social mobility. Designed for nontraditional students juggling work, family, and other responsibilities, the program also strengthens economic and social equity.
Building momentum statewide. In the inaugural year, over 16,500 adult learners have applied statewide, showing strong demand for this new opportunity.
Includes wraparound services. SUNY is investing in expanded advising, tutoring, evening/weekend classes, and additional support like food pantries at many community colleges—ensuring students have what they need to succeed.
